If you have ever been camping in Maine in June you may have been saved by the dragonfly, or wish you had been. They are one of the fastest flying insects in the world who happen to hunt black flies, mosquitos and other biting insects that drive Mainers and beyond crazy. They over power the smaller pray in mid flight. It is incredible to witness. The buzz of the mosquito is instantly silenced. Dragonflies are the stealth fighter pilots of the insect world. Thankfully there is estimated to be nearly 160 species of dragonfly in Maine. Here’s to hoping that when you set up your next tent and you are taking in a sunset like this one on Chesuncook Lake there is a dragon fly hatch close by.
